Rafting Types

Rafting is done by using an inflatable raft to float down the river. These rafts are made from a strong multi layered vinyl or rubberized material. Within the material are individual air chambers that have to be aired up prior to launching in the water. The material is strong enough to withstand going over rocks and hitting other smaller debris. However, caution should always be used as holes can still be punctured into the side of the raft.

There are several different types of rafts you can choose from. Most rafts are large enough to carry a couple people and their necessary gear. The most popular sizes of these rafts is either six feet by eight feet or eleven feet by twenty feet. The size of raft that is being used should comfortably hold the passengers and cargo.

One type of raft that is gaining in popularity is the single person raft. This smaller raft style is often referred to as a pack raft. This is because it is just big enough to hold one person and the smallest amount of items that are absolutely necessary. These rafts are very portable. They are also easier for a single person to move, launch, and handle down the river.

Another popular raft type is the catamaran style raft. This raft has a unique style as it has two separate hulls on which it floats. This style of raft usually has a deck area for the passengers and cargo to sit.

Rafting is a very fun sport but it can be dangerous too. Making sure you are comfortable on the raft will help you pay attention to necessary obstacles and have fun at the same time. The different styles of rafts have their own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right style for your individual skill level will help insure a better trip down the river.
